1. Oxidation stability. The ability of an oil to resist oxidation under certain external conditions is called oxidative stability. Diesel engine oil in the use of continuous air oxidation and deterioration, the formation of acidic substances and asphalt, and then precipitate gelatinous sediment caused by oil filter blockage, piston ring adhesion and piston, piston ring overheating. Therefore, oil is required to have a certain oxidation resistance.

2. The viscosity. The selection principle of oil is to form enough oil film on the friction surface of the machine parts, and select lubricating oil with the lowest viscosity as possible under the premise of ensuring normal lubrication of the machine parts. For often working under heavy load (such as construction machinery diesel engine), working load often changes, open and stop frequently or in the surrounding environmental pollution conditions of the diesel generator set, should choose high viscosity oil. In hot areas or high summer temperatures, it is advisable to use high viscosity oil.

3. The condensation degrees. The highest temperature at which the oil cools and begins to lose its fluidity under given conditions is called the freezing point. Freezing point is an index to ensure the fluidity and filter property of oil at low temperature. The freezing point of diesel engine oil is generally between -35~5℃.

4. Flash point. When oil is heated, oil and gas are formed on its surface. When heated to a certain temperature, the mixture formed by oil and gas and air scattered on the oil surface will flash when it encounters external open fire. The lowest temperature to produce this phenomenon is called the flash point of oil. Oil with a low flash point tends to evaporate. Flash point temperature is the safety index of oil in storage, transportation and use.

5. The carbon residue. Put the oil into the carbon residue determination device, in the test conditions of air, heating to evaporation and decomposition, the residual coke black residue after the discharge of combustion gas is the residual carbon, the residual carbon value is expressed by mass fraction. The main substances forming carbon residue are asphaltenes, colloid and the superposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in oil. Due to carbon residue caused by carbon accumulation will make the piston ring bite, bearing abrasion and oil deterioration and other faults, so it is required that the smaller the carbon residue in the oil, the better.
